Representatives from the Laboratory for Infectious and Tropical Diseases (LITD) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) participated in the WACCBIP Research Conference, held from July 29-31, 2026, at the University of Ghana. The team was accompanied by its Team Leader and WACCBIP Faculty member, Dr Bismarck Dinko.
Held under the theme “African Bioscience at the Interface of Health, Disease, and Environment,” the three-day hybrid conference brought together leading scientists, experienced researchers, research fellows, and emerging investigators from across Africa and beyond to explore current advances and future directions in African bioscience.
The conference featured keynote addresses and scientific presentations covering critical areas including African-led research priorities, sustainable local health financing, viral evolution, and public health surveillance. Sessions throughout the conference further highlighted advances in malaria research, molecular diagnostics, therapeutic target discovery, and the mechanisms through which pathogens evade existing control strategies.
Contributions from research fellows and graduate students also featured prominently, highlighting emerging scientific talent and reinforcing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to addressing Africa’s complex health and public health challenges.
For the LITD team, the conference provided a valuable platform for scientific learning, knowledge exchange, and networking. Engagements with local and international researchers created opportunities to strengthen existing collaborations and establish new partnerships that can help expand the laboratory’s research capacity.
The team’s participation reflects LITD’s continued commitment to advancing research in infectious and tropical diseases and contributing to collaborative efforts aimed at improving disease control, strengthening public health systems, and driving bioscience innovation in Africa.
